What is the Nordic design style?

Nordic design champions a minimalist approach – it focuses on clean lines, open spaces and a blend of natural elements.

The core philosophy of this style is to create environments that feel light, airy and inherently functional without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. In a kitchen, this design style transforms everyday rooms into luxurious spaces that are characterised by simplicity and charm.

Nordic design is also often referred to as Scandinavian (or ‘Scandi’ for short) due to the overlapping geographical regions. Nordic refers to Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden while Scandinavia includes Denmark, Norway and Sweden, so these terms are often used interchangeably.

Modern style with rustic simplicity

Nordic design champions a minimalist approach – it focuses on clean lines, open spaces and a blend of natural elements.

Nordic kitchens balance contemporary design with rustic elements, marrying sleek surfaces with warm textures, offering a space where functionality meets artistic expression that is both modern and inviting. The result is a kitchen that feels both cutting-edge and timeless.

Neutral colours

The hallmark of Nordic design is its reliance on a restrained, neutral palette. Whites, shades of grey and a couple of well chosen colours create a serene backdrop that allows natural light to highlight every detail. In kitchens, these shades promote an uncluttered, fresh aesthetic that fosters a sense of calm and order. The muted tones ensure that the space remains versatile and enduringly stylish.

Nordic Style Functionality

Beyond its visual appeal, Nordic design is celebrated for its emphasis on practicality. Every element in a Nordic kitchen is meticulously chosen for both form and function. Smart storage solutions, ergonomic layouts and durable materials ensure that the space is not only visually appealing but also highly efficient for everyday use. This commitment to functionality guarantees that luxury is experienced alongside convenience

Typical Norcid Style Colours

The typical Nordic colour palette is based on pale shades that do not overshadow the interior, using whites, ochres and light and dark greys, alongside touches of black and plenty of greenery. White is often used as the primary backdrop in Nordic interior design as it amplifies natural light, creating a bright and open space; it’s also a great canvas to combine with other colours. Light and dark greys introduce a sophisticated contrast to a Nordic kitchen – light grey offers a gentle balance, while dark grey provides striking depth and modern appeal.
